This article outlines the required documents for completing a Virtual Verification of Identity (VOI), including accepted ID types and minimum document combinations.
Overview
To complete a Virtual VOI, you must provide valid identity documents that meet the required criteria:
- Original (no photocopies) Current and not expired
- Exception: An Australian passport can be up to 2 years expired
If your documents show different names (e.g., due to marriage or legal name change), you must also provide the following to link your name across all documents:
- Marriage Certificate or
- Change of Name Certificate
Take Note:
- All documents must be clearly visible and legible during submission
- Ensure all details match across documents to avoid delays
- Supporting documents may be requested if requirements are not met
Minimum Document Requirements
For Australian citizens or residents:
Option 1
- Australian passport/ foreign passport/ Australian Evidence of Immigration Status ImmiCard / Australian Migration Status ImmiCard
- Australian driver’s licence or photo card
- Change of name or marriage certificate (if applicable)
Option 2
- Australian passport / foreign passport / Australian Evidence of Immigration Status ImmiCard / Australian Migration Status ImmiCard
- Full birth certificate, citizenship certificate, or descent certificate
- Medicare, Centrelink, or Department of Veterans’ Affairs card
- Change of name or marriage certificate (if applicable)
Option 3
- Australian driver’s licence or photo card
- Full birth certificate, citizenship certificate, or descent certificate
- Medicare, Centrelink, or Department of Veterans’ Affairs card
- Change of name or marriage certificate (if applicable)
Option 4
Option 4a
- Australian passport/ foreign passport / Australian Evidence of Immigration Status ImmiCard / Australian Migration Status ImmiCard
- Another government-issued photographic identity document

- Australian passport or foreign passport
- Full birth certificate

- Identifier declaration
- Full birth certificate, citizenship certificate, or descent certificate
- Medicare, Centrelink, or Department of Veterans’ Affairs card

Option 5b
- Identifier declaration by a person specified in Verification of Identity Standard (paragraph 4.4(e)*)
- Medicare, Centrelink, or Department of Veterans’ Affairs card
- Change of name or marriage certificate (if applicable)

For Non-Australian Citizens or Residents
You must provide documents from one (1) of the combinations below:
